Dogs – How To Avoid Being Driven To Distraction

We all know the old expression that dogs are man’s best friend – but without the proper precautions they could easily become a motorist’s worst enemy.

Whether you’re travelling to the vets, setting off on holiday, or even popping down to the local shops, you don’t need a back seat Bonzo bouncing about.

Rule 57 of The Highway Code points out that we should make sure that dogs are “suitably restrained so they cannot distract you.”

But according to a Dogs Trust survey, nearly half of British dog owning drivers are disregarding the code and not securing their dogs properly.

And while you can’t be fined for breaking the code, you can find yourself liable for a fine and penalty points for driving without due care and attention.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that if an unrestrained dog is responsible for an accident, your insurers are unlikely to pay out.

The idea, then, is to make sure your dog is safely restrained and not a distraction so that you can stop quickly, without injuring yourself, your pet or anybody else.

So – what can we do to ensure your dog is safe to transport and also as comfortable as possible?

One of the better options, according to the RSPCA, is a dog crate. You should buy one which gives your pet enough room to sit and stand at full height and turn around easily. Your dog should be able to lie down as it would naturally and be able to see out of the crate.

Good ventilation and air flow is a must and bedding should be put in so that the dog doesn’t slide about during the journey. It’s also a good idea to take a favourite toy.

You could consider a car harness instead. This works by linking in with the seat belt system and securing your pet. It’s vital that your dog is measured correctly or the harness may be the wrong size and not work efficiently. Your vet can advise on severe doggie car sickness.

Of course, you should take plenty of water for the journey. It’s best to make sure your dog is fed no more than two hours before you travel. Do not allow its head to hang of the window.

Some dogs take to cars like a duck to water, while others are…a little trickier. Sometimes it’s not even the journey but the fear of the destination – like the dreaded trip to the vets.

Lots of short journeys, reinforced with a favourite treat, can help dogs associate the car with ‘nice’ things.

And finally, on the subject of vets, these trips can be stressful for a dog-loving driver at the best of times, and downright horrible at the worst. It’s a good idea to give yourself a little extra time to make the journey and to park up safely. Perhaps, if you fear the worst for your dog, invite a friend or partner to come along with you. You’ve been kind to your pet; be kind to yourself too.
