Motorists can boost safety on major highways by reporting substandard traffic signs

Drivers are being given the chance to do their bit to improve road safety by reporting poor signage as part of a campaign by an independent motoring watchdog.

We’ve all come across situations where the information you need for your motorway turn or junction is obscured by a tree, out of date, or so filthy that you can barely read it.

Sometimes you may even have to slow down for a split second to decipher the information. Your attention may be off the road, creating a potential hazard, while you work out what is going on.

Now the campaign group Transport Focus has launched the Sort My Sign initiative which gives drivers the chance to report bad signage to Highways England. www.transportfocus.org.uk/sortmysign/

Report poor signage, says Transport Focus

Chief executive of Transport Focus, Anthony Smith, said that if signage is not clear, it is not safe.

He said: “We want to hear from road users about signs and information that aren’t up to scratch. We’ll use what you say to press Highways England to make journeys easier and safer.

“There is nothing more frustrating than missing your turnoff because the sign was hidden behind a tree or missing crucial information. While we have some of the safest roads there are still too many signs which are broken, confusing or out of date. If it’s not clear, it’s not safe.”

Highways England has responsibility for operating, maintaining and improving 4,300 miles of motorways and A roads.

Transport Focus is calling for it to:

Act on broken or inaccurate signs reported by road users
Provide better information during delays and unexpected disruption
Review the existing standards for signs on motorway and major ‘A’ roads

Campaign has RAC backing

RAC Spokesman Rod Dennis welcomed the Transport Focus initiative. He hoped it would give drivers a chance to “easily report problems” and get something done about them.

He said: “As drivers we might be more dependent on satnavs for getting around than ever, but that’s no excuse for unclear, confusing or incomplete signage – in fact clear signs are vital to help many drivers navigate safely and confidently, especially in parts of the country that they don’t know so well."

Poor signage on local roads

When it comes to local roads, excluding motorways and A roads, a recent RAC study suggests drivers are increasingly fed up with poor road sign visibility.

The organisation’s 2019 Report on Motoring says that twice the number of motorists, compared to the previous year, said sign visibility on local roads had got worse – rising to 17 per cent from eight per cent. Drivers were also unhappy with the level of maintenance work on grass and foliage on local roads, with 22 per cent citing this as one reason why conditions had deteriorated. The RAC suggests that the two issues may well be linked, “with substandard foliage maintenance leading to an increase in signs being obscured by vegetation.”
