The two most progressive car markets – the electric vehicle (EV) and the SUV - look set to continue dominating in 2021, as people increasingly demand zero emissions, more power and more flexibility in their motoring. All the big names are racing to become established in the EV market with tech improvements making the EV more dynamic and more affordable all the time, whilst SUVs somehow adapt to cover the family, sporty and driving enthusiasts’ segments.
We’ve taken stock to give you a quick rundown of the most exciting cars to emerge in 2021, including those that offer the benefits of EVs and the practical elements of SUVs too.
Electric Mini
It took a while for Mini to break through into the EV market but this has the same classic Mini feel and is driving better than ever. Instant torque gives this a level of power not usually associated with EVs, and the sharp and sleek look could fool you to underestimate the fantastic environmental features; a 145 miles range at 4 pence per mile, home charging in just over three hours and the Sat Nav is in-built to notify when in range of any of 7000 charging stations in the UK. At 0-62mph in just 7.3 seconds and with the nippy handling you expect from a Mini, this is a car spec’d to perfection.
Dacia Spring Electric
Billed as Europe’s most affordable EV, this is similar to the Renault Kwid and the VW e-up and it does the essentials really well. This new Dacia is practical as a city car, and has great boot space, with an electric drivetrain offering a small battery and motor, but still there is a good range of 140 miles and you can get 80% charge in less than an hour. Sure enough, this rapidly-growing brand has delivered another market segment in fine style.
BMW i4
This is the all electric counterpart to the BMW 4 Series Coupe, and indeed is the brand’s first all electric Coupe. And in that respect, although it looks the same, there are big differences, with a fifth generation electric drivetrain and much lighter and more compact electric motor and transmission. The 80 kWh battery has 20% more capacity and offers an impressive range of 373 miles. With a 0-62mph start in just four seconds, the i4 offers the perfect driving experience for long distance or for everyday commuting, and BMW have even gone the extra mile eco-wise with less metals used in the drive system and in the battery.
Audi e-Tron GT
We already know that Audi cover every market segment in magnificent style, and as a Coupe or an SUV, the e-Tron doesn’t disappoint. Using VW’s MEB platform for all electric, this is a vehicle that holds its own against more established EV models. The rear or four wheel drive is a good option to have, whilst 80% charge in 30 minutes and a range of 280 miles makes this a crossover vehicle with impeccable quality.
Nissan Qashqai
This UK-made SUV has been a runaway success, with over 620,000 sales on these shores alone. So there are few surprises with this new model, just sharper looks and bigger external dimensions offering more space inside. This is a hybrid 1.3-litre turbo engine and a 1.5 litre petrol unit charges the battery and a 188 bhp electric motor. The Qashqai was pretty much perfect straight away, so you can imagine how it performs now, and with cutting edge tech all over this new model, it is essential you check it out in 2021.
Skoda Enyaq
This is Skoda’s first EV and another cousin of the VW MEB architecture, which offers the smooth performance we have come to expect from the resurgent Czech brand. The rear mounted motor offers a 316 mile range from a huge 80 kWh battery, and this is a roomy SUV for a family offering a new era of design quality. There are plenty of interior spec options to choose from and two or four wheel drive offers plenty of versatility on the road too.
